phpMyAdmin is a free open source software tool written in PHP which allows users to administer MySQL databases over the Web. It is automatically installed by default on your local host (at http://localhost) if you've installed WAMP or MAMP on your computer. It is also included by most hosting providers - you have access to phpMyAdmin in your freehostingnoads account you recently created.
What can phpMyAdmin Do?
Just about everything concerning a MySQL database! It allows the user to create and delete databases and tables, as well add add and edit data to these tables. The user can modify the structure of tables.
Let's Create a New Table
Let's Create a New Table named ads on the student database with two fields.
Let's name the fields Description (varchar - 255 characters) and Price (mediumint - 9).
After we click the SAVE button above, we see the structure of the ads table we just created. Also, note that phpMyAdmin shows us the SQL code that was executed to create the new table.
Using the INSERT tab, we can add records to the new table.
After clicking the GO button, we see the new record is added (row is inserted). Also, note that phpMyAdmin shows us the SQL command that was used to add the new record.
Using the BROWSE tab, we can view all the records in the table.
STOP! Take some time to play with phpMyAdmin on your local computer (if you installed WAMP or MAMP on your computer), or on your freehostingnoads account you recently created. Add several tables, and when you get finished use the DROP tab to drop (delete) one of your new tables. With one of your tables, add some records using the INSERT tab. From the BROWSE tab, use the EDIT button to edit a record, and use the DELETE button to delete a record from your table.
